A blueprint for ocean climate action

The Biden Administration charts new course on ocean climate action

On World Ocean Day, President Biden committed to developing America’s first Ocean-Climate Action Plan. A 2020 analysis estimated that investments in ocean-based climate mitigation measures in the United States could reduce carbon emissions by up to 13.7% annually by 2050. A comprehensive ocean climate action plan will ensure mitigation and adaptation benefits are maximized to reduce emissions and increase resilience while providing jobs, protecting vulnerable communities, and safeguarding our natural resources.

The Healthy Ocean Coalition is proud to have collaborated with many organizations to develop the Blueprint for Ocean Climate Action. The Blueprint is a set of policy recommendations supported by over 90 organizations and businesses nationwide, meant to inform the development of this administration’s ocean climate action plan. The Blueprint contains 12 key categories of recommendations: 

  1. Expand Responsibly-Sited Offshore Wind

  2. Phase Out Offshore Drilling and Support the Just Transition to Renewable Energy

  3. Promote Green Shipping and Ports 

  4. Protect Blue Carbon

  5. Reduce Plastic Pollution and Emissions

  6. Advance Climate Ready Fisheries

  7. End Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated Fishing 

  8. Advance Marine Protected Areas

  9. Enhance Coastal Resilience

  10. Minimize and Address Ocean Acidification

  11. Evaluate Ocean-Based Carbon Dioxide Removal 

  12. Prioritize Public Engagement
