What We Do

Our Vision

We envision a world with a healthy and resilient ocean.

Our Mission

Build a network of ocean lovers who work together to advance ocean conservation that centers the ocean and people.

The Challenge

For far too long, policymakers have approached the climate change and biodiversity loss crises as separate issues, leading to decisions being made in silos. As a result, far too many polices for ocean conservation and protection are not reflective of the interconnectedness of the ecosystem and its collective impact on all life on Earth. Conserving, managing, and restoring ocean ecosystems are key to the success and health of humans, communities, wildlife, and the economy.

We Believe

● We are stronger and more influential together in advocating for the necessary immediate change needed to mitigate the harm to the health of the ocean.

● We can develop equitable and just ocean conservation policy to dismantle the existing harms of climate change on the ocean and people.

● People care about the ocean, but many need access to information, opportunities for advocacy, or a network of support.

Our Approach

We believe collaboration is key to ensuring ocean conservation policies in the United States are informed by and reflective of the people, regions, and wildlife they should serve.

We work to remove barriers that keep people from becoming ocean advocates by providing relevant and timely information, building capacity to speak out for the ocean, and highlighting opportunities to engage with policymakers.

We lift the work and voices of our network members to those in power and make advocacy for change more effective and efficient.

Core Strategies

  • Educate

Provide our network information and ways to engage around equitable federal ocean policies.

  • Train

Expand skills of network members to effectively advocate for ocean protection and conservation.

  • Activate

Highlight opportunities for network members to take action to support equitable federal ocean policies.

 Our ocean priorities

30x30 campaign

30x30 Campaign

The HOC works to protect 30 percent of the ocean by 2030 to save biodiversity, mitigate climate change, and mitigate the inequitable access and distribution of nature around the United States.

Ocean Climate Action

The HOC uplifts the crucial role the ocean plays to mitigate climate change and works to ensure the U.S. government implements its Ocean Climate Action Plan.

community-based ocean conservation movement building

The Healthy Ocean Advocacy Academy supports increasing the breadth of the conservation movement through advocacy skill building and local community building.
